19 March 2005 - A large gathering of parents and children attended the launch of Thimphu's first music school - Kilu Music School - which offers lessons in several western and traditional instruments for children above six years.

The school which will start conducting classes from April offers basic, intermediate and advanced lessons in piano, violin, guitar, drums, dranyen (lute), lim (flute) and yangchen (xylophone). Classes will be held twice a week for 90 minutes.

"Six volunteer teachers will run the school," said Jigme Drukpa of the Royal Academy of performing arts who is one of the volunteer teachers and will teach the traditional instruments. The other teachers are expatriates living and working in Bhutan.

DANIDA has provided funds to rent a place to house the school.
